SOLAR CHARGING STATION.

SOLAR CHARGING STATION

Engineers for a Sustainable World - Oakland University (ESW-OU) is excited to be kicking off our first design project. Starting Fall of 2021 our chapter will be designing, building, and implementing a solar-powered outdoor charging station for the Oakland University campus. This will be achieved by retrofitting a picnic table with a battery storage unit and then attaching this base to a homemade solar canopy. The intent of this project is twofold. Primarily, this will be used by students to charge their electronics while enjoying the fresh air. Secondly, this project will help teach students about how much of a carbon footprint something as simple as charging a phone can have on the world.

RENEW

RENEW.

“Renew” is a collaborative project with students from the University of Michigan. It is to be a website that homeowners and businesses can utilize to learn everything there is to know about powering their lives through solar power, including types and costs. We have assisted with the groundwork and research, creating a flowchart of what to consider when thinking about switching to solar energy. Currently, our group is creating a calculator tool to assist in teaching the financial breakdowns of solar power.

VOLUNTEER WORK

VOLUNTEER WORK.

ESW-OU prides itself on helping those in and around the Metro Detroit area. Through volunteering thus far, we have built a critter fence to stop deer from eating produce at Oakland Hills Community Garden, spread mulch around walkways at the Growing Pontiac garden, and have offered our services to OU’s Organic Farm student organization. Throughout the school year, we plan on continuing to service the community and bring innovative new ideas to each service opportunity.
